Summary
Johnson meets the people on Cope’s expedition. In addition to Cope’s assistant Charles Sternberg, there are several students: the asthmatic Leander “Toad” Davis, the cheerful Harold Chapman, George Morton (whom Johnson does not find likeable), and J.C. Isaac, who is very much afraid of Native Americans. Cope tells Johnson that they will be going to the Montana territory, and Johnson is shocked because he has heard of growing Native American hostilities in Montana. However, Cope assures Johnson that there will be no danger, and Johnson finds Cope “altogether agreeable” (65). In Utah, a sheriff attempts to arrest Cope for murder, and Cope realizes that Marsh must have bribed the sheriff to arrest Cope for the fake crime. Cope unleashes his sudden and startling temper upon the sheriff, and the expedition leaves Utah. The expedition later encounters an army officer who informs...
