Stepping Over a Line
The step that literally takes a character over a line is a symbol of a change. Some of these are small changes such as Gene stepping over the boundary of the basketball court as a kid, leaving the game behind. Some are much more important such as Gene's decision to step across the street dividing the academic side of the O'Dowd campus from the gym.
The Position on the Sidelines
The position a person has on the sidelines symbolizes his or her role. As coach, Lou stands in front of the bleachers, and his assistant coaches are standing or seated nearby. The members of the team who are not playing are seated on the front row, very near the head coach. Fans are seated behind them.
