Point of View

Dragon Hoops is a graphic novel which usually means there is a narrator who is not part of the story. However, in this novel, the narrator is Gene Yang. Yang is also a main character and the book's author. He makes a point of introducing himself, presenting his backstory, and depicting his role in the story. The perspective is not as limited as is typical with first-person narration. Gene does a lot of research into the past, including the history of basketball in general and the history of the Bishop O'Dowd High School basketball team. Gene also acts as a reporter by interviewing the O'Dowd players and coaches. Through these interviews, Gene tells the readers about events that he has not personally experienced.

There are still some limitations to the perspective. For example, Gene gets very little information when he interviews two of the basketball...
