Chapter 9 Summary
Tile and Skink decide to leave Pickney where he is because they cannot report their find to the police. Tile has no probable cause for investigating the scene. Tile is also convinced he would not find any support from the local sheriff because he is biased against Tile due to his skin color. Tile drives Skink and Decker back to the road that runs beside Skink's cabin. After Tile drives off, a pickup truck approaches. It appears to be the same truck Tile saw parked at Morgan Slough. One of the men gets out and begins following Skink and Decker through the woods. Seconds later, gun fire breaks out. Skink tells Decker to run. Seconds later, Skink begins returning fire. When everything quiets down, Decker discovers that Skink has shot their pursuer and taken his gun. Later that night, Skink disposes of the...
