Summary

After the party, Lucy relaxes at Hunter’s estate in France. Olivia calls her and reveals that she is pregnant. Lucy encourages her to have the baby. Francis, meanwhile, is “being perfect as usual” (156) and says he will support any decision around the pregnancy. Lucy later considers her feelings for Hunter; she says he “not only made her feel safe, but left her free to feel unsafe” (158). Lucy continues to treat her cancer with holistic medicines. Hunter arrives, soon followed by Saul, and they discuss whether the effects of a placebo are inherently deceptive. Lucy emphasizes that the appeal of holistic medicine lies in the “reassurance of dealing directly with my body and not just with my data” (162).
