Chapter 8

Two days later, Eileen calls for Grace from her apartment steps. Grace is getting a pedicure from Rayleen and eating Chinese food. Eileen looks a wreck, and she tells Grace that she wants her home, now. Grace explains that she is eating, and her mother relents and goes back into her apartment. When Grace goes home, Eileen notices for the first time that Grace’s hair has been cut. This infuriates Eileen, who confronts Rayleen. Grace explains her hair was knotted and needed help. Eileen begins crying. She and Grace return to their apartment. An hour later, Grace returns to Rayleen’s, asking to spend the night, because her mom is loaded again. Rayleen makes a place for Grace on the couch.
