Summary

In Chapter 23, Ellie tells Nap that when she saw Maura before Diana’s death, Diana was telling the two of them how she planned to break up with Leo after the fall dance being planned at the school. Nap tries to argue that Diana and Leo’s relationship was solid but Ellie suggests he was not as in tune with his brother as he thought.

Outside, Nap feels like someone is watching him. He spots a person standing beside a tree, watching him and moves toward that person. As he does so, his phone rings. It is an officer with the Ann Arbor police department calling to say Beth had taken a sabbatical from work. No one from her work or even her ex-husband knew where she was.
