Part 1, Chapter 40 Summary
Having been a galley slave for a very long time, on the death of his current master, the man becomes the property of a cruel Venetian man called Hassan Aga. Although the man never loses his hope of freedom, he finds himself downtrodden in a prison for Christian slaves called a bagnio. The man is held on ransom because they know he is a captain, although he tells them of his lack of wealth due to his father's excesses. One day, out seeing how far they can jump in their chains, the man and some other prisoners are presented with a mysterious cane, whose owner clearly means for the man to have it. It contains some money, and they determine that it is from a woman of the house, who feels sympathy for them as a secret Christian. Again the cane...
