Summary

In Chapter 52, Dombey shows up at Alice and her mother’s home after Mrs. Brown stopped him in the street to tell him she had information for him. Dombey agrees to pay them after the information is given, though Alice says she does not want the money, just to get revenge on Carker. She tells Dombey that he can work the payment issue out with her mother. They have Dombey hide in a closet; Rob Toodles arrives carrying Carker’s precious bird. Mrs. Brown begs, flatters, and then beats and strangles Rob until he tells her where Carker has gone. He tells Mrs. Brown that he saw Edith the night she ran away at Carker's house but that the two did not leave together. Edith went without Carker to board a ship.
