Summary
In Chapter 46, Carker is more watchful than ever before over Dombey’s house and business. He is clearly anxious though we do not know why. One day Alice Marwood and her mother are watching Carker and notice Rob Toodles; Mrs. Marwood knows Rob because she used to help him when he was skipping school. Rob agrees to go to a pub where the Marwoods begin asking about Carker and where he lives. Rob is horrified that he may have revealed a secret to these two sinister women.
Back at Dombey and Son, Carker berates his brother John, reminding him yet again of his youthful mistake and telling him he should be grateful to Dombey for showing him mercy. John tells his brother that he is grateful and that Carker is not the only person who cares for Dombey. Carker is enraged by this...
