Summary
Edith Granger and Mr. Dombey’s wedding day opens Chapter 31. Dombey and Major Bagstock discuss how lucky Edith is to be marrying Dombey. Edith marries Dombey in the same proud, cold, angry manner in which she does everything. Her hand shakes while she signs the marriage register. Carker disturbs Edith. She feels like he can see right through her.
After the ceremony, the group has a breakfast reception at Mrs. Skewton’s wealthy cousin Feenix’s house. The whole party celebrates, then Edith and Dombey leave for their honeymoon. Florence goes back to her empty house, feeling heartbroken over the loss of her mother, her brother, and her friend Walter, lost somewhere at sea.
