Summary
In Chapter 19, it is the day before Walter is set to leave for Barbadoes and he is trying to be cheerful for his uncle’s sake. Walter tells Uncle Sol that Florence’s nurse, Susan Nipper, agreed to stop by and let Sol know how Florence is doing every so often and asks his uncle to pass the information on to him when he can. Just as they are talking about them, Florence and Susan arrive at the shop. Florence, sad that Walter is going away, offers to visit Sol to help ease the loss of his nephew. She also tells Walter how much Paul liked him and hopes that he can be like a brother to her for the rest of her life. Walter tells Florence privately that he thinks he will be gone for a long time.
