Love's Effects
Love changes an individual's life. Love of a parent for a child, love for a friend, and romantic love affect the lives of characters in this novel.
Petey recounts his childhood as a means of describing the effects of his mother's love and his own love for his son. Petey says his childhood was difficult. His father left when Petey was very young, and Petey and his mother found themselves in a shelter with little money or food. It was his mother's love that kept them going. Her love was unconditional. She forgave him when he misbehaved and always did her best to take care of him. Petey says his mother's love was so strong that he continued to feel it after she died.
