Point of View

The novels are written in third person from an omniscient perspective. The only limitation of the perspective is that two youngsters, George and Harold, are the author and illustrator. Each graphic novel opens with a scene that describes George and Harold as the creators of the comic series. They prove themselves to be unreliable narrators in the opening scene of For Whom the Ball Rolls because they talk about winning an award when they actually tricked the principal into giving it to them, and about being “chased by our admirers” (8) when they are actually running from the angry principal and another student.

The omniscient perspective is necessary because the action shifts among the various characters, and no one character is present for all the scenes. In some cases, characters are not even aware of what is happening to other characters in that same scene. For...
