Summary
In Chapter 21, Amal and her parents visit Uncle Joe and Aunt Mandy for Mandy's birthday dinner. Many immediately ask if Amal wants to take off the hajib. Amal says she is having “a bad hair day” (Location 1990) and refuses. Joe introduces his boss, Alan. Joe and Mandy often include others in their dinner gatherings in an effort to prove they have assimilated into the Australian culture. Joe goes overboard in an effort to use Australian slang, creating some awkwardness.
In Chapter 22, Amal is visiting Leila who argues vehemently with her brother about his atrocious behavior. When Hakan is gone, Leila asks how it is possible for a girl to hate her brother. Leila says their parents let Hakan do whatever he wants without reprimand. Leila eventually says she cannot bear to think about it any longer and they watch a movie.
