Lockboxes
The lockboxes are a symbol of safety. Dick instructs Dan to make a mental lockbox in which he can lock up the physical manifestation of Mrs. Massey, the woman from Room 217 of the Overlook. Dan later makes another lockbox to contain Horace Derwent. These boxes are intended to keep Dan safe from his traumatic memories of the Overlook.
Flies
Flies are a symbol of death. Dan can see nonexistent flies on the face of people who are dying or suffering from a life-threatening illness. When Dan sees just a few flies on Billy’s face, Dan knows that there is still time to save Billy’s life but he has to act quickly. When Dan sees a person with flies covering his face, he knows that there is no hope for that person.
