Summary
In Chapter 5, armed men come into Kiku and Aiko’s stall to do an inspection, and one of them confiscates Aiko’s copy of The New Republic even though internees are allowed to have it. He also takes a Swiss army knife. Aiko tells Kiku that she has heard they may be moved to a permanent camp. These camps are being quickly built, and internees hear many different rumors. Kiku knows that she will be taken to Topaz in Utah because she learned that growing up. People get packed even though they have not been ordered to do so; they have become accustomed to chaos.
Mr. Matsuzawa knocks on the stall door bringing presents, little trinkets, that he has made for Aiko and Kiku. One is engraved with Kiku’s name. The two have never spoken to the man before, so they...
