Summary

Kiku lies on the ground outside with trees around her. She thinks she will not suffer any displacements now that she is home, but she says, “Some things, you can’t escape” (46). She hears Donald Trump on the television inside saying that he will choose America over globalism and will build a wall. Her mother glares at the television, and she covers her ears when she hears, “Make America great again!” (48).

The fog returns and Kiku becomes part of a large group. A man has a gun, when a family’s number is called, they have to go to the busses. Ernestina is there. When Kiku’s number is called, a man warns her that she needs to go. She gets on a crowded bus and is taken to Tanforan Assembly Center where there are more armed guards. The...
