Summary
In the section, "May," Oksana returns home to find her dog, Malysh, missing. Frantic, she calls him, furious for entrusting him to Max. While racing around in search of Malysh, Oksana thinks bitterly about Max and Katya’s romance in comparison to her failed marriage with Anton. Two older women near the water say they have not seen Malysh. Oksana recalls witnessing the Golosovsky disappearance.
She calls Katya. With Max on the line, she accuses him of irresponsibility. Katya and Max say they will help her search. Malysh was all she had; even Anton never understood her connection with the dog. Malysh's disappearance reminds her again of the Golosovsky sisters, all the police questioning after she came forward. Katya and Max pick her up. They drive around searching without success.
She continues thinking how aggressive Ryakhovsky was during the interviews. She remembers...
