Summary
In the section "February," Revmira and her husband Artyom make breakfast before Artyom leaves for work. Revmira thinks about her late husband, Gleb, who died this day years prior. She and Artyom discuss the possibility of the day's rescue mission. Artyom says they plan to search the river for the Golosovsky girls come spring. Irritated about the police’s obvious racial biases, Revmira asks if they will also search for her second cousin Alla's daughter Lilia.
Revmira recalls the conversation she and Alla had over the holidays. Afterwards, Revmira told Artyom Alla believed Lilia was taken, as she was also young and small of stature. Artyom is resistant, not wanting to push Ryakhovsky. Revmira thinks about Gleb again, how quickly they fell in love and married. She realizes how good Artyom has been to her despite her broken heart.
