Chapters 20-23 Summary

In chapter 20, Bud finishes out his list but has had no luck. That night, Bud promises to go house shopping with Holly the next day. They drive to several homes, finally settling on a small rental house that Bud finds cramped and unappealing, but Holly is deeply excited about. Holly wants to sign the paperwork right away, but Bud hesitates. Finally Bud agrees that Holly should take the place, even though he says he cannot tell his wife about them until after Lamar Pye has been put back in jail. Later that day, Bud goes to the headquarters to see C.D. C.D. is very drunk and unhappy because the tire print did not lead anywhere. C.D. knows that now they will make him retire.
