Point of View

The novel is written from the limited perspective of Greg, a young teen who presents the information as entries in his diary. Greg is a young boy who has a unique way of looking at things. The perspective is greatly affected by his attitudes and limitations. In many cases, he is unable to understand exactly what is happening. His words in the diary reflect what he believes to be happening, leaving the reader to sometimes figure out what is really happening. In some cases, Greg seems to mislead the reader on purpose. Typically, Greg misleads through what he writes, then brings the reader to understand the truth through the pictures. For example, Greg says, “even though I've tried to encourage my friend Rowley to start making a name for himself, he just doesn't seem all that interested” (8).
