Israel
Israel is a country in the Middle East on the Mediterranean Sea. It is considered the biblical Holy Land to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The history of Israel is tumultuous. The land that comprises modern-day Israel was once part of the Ottoman Empire. After World War I, this land was renamed Palestine and given to Britain during the partitioning of the Empire by the League of Nations. In 1947, the United Nations passed a resolution urging for the division of Palestine into separate areas for Arabs and Jews, in order to allow for the formation of a Jewish state. When this division into separate states was enacted in May of 1948, war broke out between the Arabs and the Jews. In 1949, Israel signed an armistice agreement with Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria to end hostilities. New boundaries for Israel were drawn. These lines held until the Six-Day War in 1967.
