Z’s proper birth-name is never revealed. He is a Jewish-American man from Long Island who studied at Hebrew University before becoming an Israeli operative. At different times in the narrative, he is known by different names. In 2002, Z goes by the name of Joshua. At this time, he is working as an operative in Berlin. There, he meets Farid, with whom he becomes friendly. Mikami and Farid engage in a business transaction that goes wrong for Farid. Farid promises to help facilitate Joshua’s import and export business, getting him access to Gaza’s market. Joshua, working under Israeli orders, takes advantage of Farid’s kindness, which results in an Israeli attack on Gaza soil that unintentionally leaves civilians dead.
