Summary
The 13th section is again set in the General’s “Limbo” of 2014. The General is alone with his soldiers in a now-empty, enemy village. A dead body lies at his feet, the corpse’s face covered in dust. The mission they just completed was payback for the murder of a Jewish family. Arab officials promised to find the perpetrators of this violence and bring them to justice; however, the General and his superiors preferred to get their own justice.
The General is then in Qibya with the soldiers he trained. He and his commandos shower the village with shells, and its inhabitants flee. In the middle of the village, the General points to a house and directs his men inside to set up command. The General walks through the house, examining its furnishings.
