"Man in the Wasteland" is a story about a boy and his father hunting for hare one morning. The first-person narrator, his father, and his dog get up before dawn and walk to Colla Bella, a high, rocky point with a lot of mist. The father and dog go off down the path, while the boy waits at the crossroads, ready with his gun to shoot the hare when the dog flushes it out of the woods. Unfortunately, he is waiting right next to the front yard of Baciccin the Blissful, who comes outside and stands directly at the crossroads, talking to the boy.
