The Breathing Method, Part 2 and Part 3 Summary
Emlyn McCarron is a doctor in New York City, who became a doctor after serving as a medic in World War I. He opens a general practice in the city, and one day in 1935 a woman named Sandra Stansfield comes to see him. She gives him a fake name, Jane Smith. McCarron determines she is pregnant. Sandra does not cry when she finds out but asks McCarron to be her doctor, if he doesn't mind she isn't married. He agrees, as long as she tells him her real name, which she does. She asks McCarron what she should do for the baby, and he gives her a pamphlet with recommendations, including vitamins and breathing exercises. McCarron says most physicians at the time frowned on these pamphlets and their advice.
