Summary
Chapter 32 opens in the summer of 1964, and Kitty is very uncomfortably pregnant because the baby has Nathan’s height, and Kitty is small. One night, Nellie, the midwife comes in as Kitty screams because of a nightmare, and Kitty says she was never supposed to be pregnant. Nellie gives her marijuana to calm her down. Kitty feels it is too painful to plan for a baby when she might not be able to raise it. Nellie reveals that she has always known she could not conceive.
It is Fall in Chapter 33, and Kitty dreams of Sarah reaching for a cake. She knows after this dream that her baby will be dark skinned. Kitty goes to tell Nellie that she is Black, but Nellie already knows because Kitty told her the night she was in a panic after her dream. Kitty plans to...
