Importance: When the novel begins, Greg is looking forward to a relaxing summer of doing nothing and having nowhere to go. However, his mom destroys these plans when she announces the family will be going on a road trip. Greg knows he has no choice but to go – and he expresses it with the astute observation that he has no control over his own life as a kid. Indeed, many of the misadventures and mishaps which will occur through the novel are beyond the control of Greg and his family at large.
