Greg is in middle school for the second year and he hopes that it will be a better experience than the last. At the beginning of the novel, the reader sees that Greg is still incredibly immature, lazy, and views people in terms of what he can get from them, or by association. He lacks the ability to have any empathy. This is especially true where Rowley is concerned, and his family members.
