Importance: When the novel begins, Greg is worried about behaving between Thanksgiving and Christmas so that Santa will bring lots of presents. His statement that wrong actions during the holidays are the worst is a prediction of ill-omens for future events. The green splotch incident that will occur later in the novel gets Greg in trouble with far more than Santa or his parents – but with the school and the police.
