Summary

In Chapter 13, Meddelin and her family discover that “Jake” was alive and had suffocated to death overnight. Ma recognizes “Jake” as Ah Guan, her flower salesman, who she had told about her attempts to find Meddelin a date. He had suggested that she make an online profile and had then catfished her to get close to Meddelin, who he had always liked. Meddelin and Fourth Aunt walk the cooler down to the boat to take the body off the island. On their way, they run into Nathan in a buggy with the parents of the bride. He stops and makes Fourth Aunt get in the buggy with her friends, then offers to walk Meddelin back with the cooler. It falls and opens. Meddelin kisses Nathan to distract him.
