Summary
Chapter 17 is titled “Dewey in the Modern World.” It opens with a photograph of Dewey sitting on top of a computer monitor. There were a few who did not understand the fascination with Dewey and others who outright objected to his presence. The library underwent big changes with the switch from the physical card catalog to a computerized system. It affected Dewey very little other than giving him a warm place to sleep (on top of the monitors). Meanwhile, changes were taking place as the town tried to recruit new businesses. The citizens cried out against a slaughter house, citing the fact that the jobs were brutal and paid poorly. Some derided the situation, claiming the people of Spencer did not want the Hispanic population that tended to fill many of those jobs.
