Summary

Chapter 14 is titled “Dewey's Great Escape.” It opens with a photo of Dewey in a box of copy paper. In August, Dewey had spent three weeks at Vicki's house where windows opened to the breeze, giving Dewey a look and smell of what was outside. Back in the library, he became jumpy and distracted. The library had windows, but none that opened. The library had two sets of doors separated by a glass foyer. Dewey began spending a lot of time in that entryway, and the staff knew he would eventually manage to escape. A new staff member, Joy Dewall, was the most likely to see Dewey, but he ignored her commands. One day, Vicki had to force Dewey back inside three times. A week later, Dewey was missing.
