Summary

Chapter 4 is titled “A Day in the Library” and opens with a picture of Dewey sitting on a typewriter. Vicki imagined Dewey welcoming those who arrive at the library, adding “Why don't you pet the cat” (31) to every patron. He liked to nap in any available lap, but would settle for a box. If he could not fit in the box, he would place whatever parts would fit, even if it was just a paw. He even managed to “wind” himself into a tissue box. Patrons who wanted to pick up a tax form or use the copier would hesitate if Dewey was there, not wanting to disturb him. Dewey would sleep through the situation.

From the beginning, the staff took care of all the expenses for Dewey, including food. In return, Dewey provided “hours of pleasure.” He sometimes jumped out of drawers...
