Summary

The novel opens with a letter from the author, Vicki Myron, written 10 years after the book was originally written. She was surprised by the book's success and the number of people who contacted her, saying they were touched by the story of Dewey, the cat who lived at the Spencer Public Library in Spencer, Iowa. Dewey touched a lot of lives but he absolutely changed Vicki's life because her book about Dewey “allowed this small-town librarian to tour the world, speaking at libraries, bookstores, and literary events” (Author Letter). The relationships between Dewey and Spencer and between Dewey and Vicki were so important because they came to be at a time when they all needed each other. Vicki goes on to thank the readers for keeping Dewey's memory alive and for making her book a success.
