Summary
Two years after the Devil’s Feast, Ilmorog looks much the same. Golden Heights is as opulent as ever, while the slum Njeruca is expanding. Warĩĩnga’s parents, who live in Njeruca, interrogate Gatuĩria to find out if he is up to the task of parenting Warĩĩnga’s child. Warĩĩnga asks Gatuĩria about his parents, and he worries how they will receive her. He has a card from his parents inviting both of them to tea, but has not shown it to Warĩĩnga because he is embarrassed by the fact that it names the places for people to buy gifts: “The Men’s and Ladies’ London Shop,” “The Shop with the Parisian Look,” and “The Woman of Rome VIP Shop” (237). Gatuĩria decides to take Warĩĩnga to the tea party in Nakuru to meet his parents.
