Summary
Gatuĩria and Warĩĩnga walk out of the cave reciting dream-like incantations in praise of Kenya. Warĩĩnga tells Gatuĩria the history of Ilmorog. She describes the wealthy residential area of Golden Heights, and the slum called New Jerusalem, Njeruca, where the working classes and unemployed live. Warĩĩnga and Gatuĩria go to a butchery for lunch. Gatuĩria speaks about his home and family background. His father, a business tycoon like Gĩtutu wa Gataangũrũ, had financed his studies abroad for 15 years. Since obtaining a job at the University of Nairobi, Gatuĩria is trying to save up the money to pay back his father. Warĩĩnga laments the cavalier attitude with which the men discussed their mistresses, which she sees as destroying women’s lives. She begins to cry as she now sees her life in greater clarity...
