Part II, Chapters 1-2 Summary

Steve has been hired by Johnny's editor to follow up on Johnny and keep him safe. Johnny is a famous writer, but his career has slipped somewhat over the years because of his drinking and poor lifestyle choices. His editor is afraid if left alone, Johnny will ruin this chance for a comeback. Steve drives a rented Ryder Truck so the motorcycle could be placed inside when and if Johnny tires of driving it. Steve picks up Cynthia, a hitchhiker, righht outside of Ely Nevada.

Steve likes Cynthia instantly, even though she is much younger than him. He admires her spunk and her courage, and is glad he broke the editor's rule about picking up hitchhikers on this mission.
