Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa is the city in which Dengue Boy's mother works. In the wake of "the massive Antarctic ice melt," Santa Rosa has become a center of industry, trade, and tourism (215). While the region was once "an arid, moribund desert at the end of the Earth," its new beachfront access has transformed the city and surrounding region (215). This is why Dengue Boy's mother must travel to Santa Rosa for work. As a cleaning woman and a nanny, his mother is beholden to the wealthy and the visiting tourists. She spends most her time in this city, as she works seven days a week in order to support herself and her child.

At the end of the short story, Dengue Girl flees Victorica for Santa Rosa. She decides to do so because she wants to get revenge on all of those who have made her and her mother...
