Demon
Demon is the main character and first person narrator of the novel. From a young age, Demon becomes acquainted with loss and abandonment. His father dies when his mother is pregnant with him. His mother is an addict, and often struggles to take care of Demon. When he is only 10 years old, his mom remarries a man named Stoner. Stoner’s presence at home changes Demon’s life. His house no longer feels like his, and his mother no longer feels like the woman he knew and loved. Shortly thereafter, his mother relapses, overdoses, and dies.
Demon hopes that in the wake of his mother’s death his family friends, the Peggots, will take him in. However, because they are elderly and already raising Maggot, their grandson and Demon’s friend, they reject Demon. He goes back into foster care, living with Mr. Crickson and the McCobb family...
