Summary

In Chapter 21, Mr. McCobb got Demon “a job at Golly’s Market” (150). Although Mr. Golly owned a convenience store, Demon “would be working for a different business on the premises” (150). People paid “to dump their trash in the lot out back” (152). Boys like Demon were “hired to pick through it” (152). Mr. Golly resold or repurposed the valuables they found. Demon worked every day after school. He gave the money to the McCobbs.

By fifth grade, Demon “was taller than everybody” (155). Although he looked older, people bullied him. When the McCobbs learned about the bullying, they bought him new clothes, believing Demon was ruining their reputation. The new clothes made him feel “more pitiful” (158). Demon found himself missing Creaky Farm.
