Summary

In Chapter 1, Demon’s mother was 18 when she had him. The Peggots found her trying to slap the life back into him after he was born. This is why Demon is a “sucker for the superhero rescue” (2). He was born in Lee County, a place “known to be crawling with copperheads” (3). Everyone was superstitious about the snakes.

Demon’s mother “had her own version” of Demon’s birth (4). Because she was an addict and “passed out for the event,” Demon doubted her story (4). Mom told him Mrs. Peggot tried taking him away from her.

Demon’s father died in an accident at Devil’s Bathtub while Mom was pregnant (5). Because Mom “lived in fear of losing custody,” she went into rehab after Demon’s birth (5). Demon had questions about Mom’s story and his father’s death.
