Lashington & Wiis

Lashington & Wiis is the primary setting for the short story. The university is located in an unidentified southern town. Magna accepts a position teaching English here shortly after completing her degree in the West Coast. She regrets the decision, as the culture at Lashington & Wiis is toxic and racist. For a time, she is able to withstand the park environment because she has Jamal’s company and comfort. After he leaves, Magna’s desperation to escape the place returns and amplifies.

Magna's Car

Magna’s car is another primary setting of the short story. Almost every night after drinking wine and watching television, Magna gets in her car and drives around the town. She feels particularly comforted being behind the wheel when she is sad or anxious. One night, when Magna is nearly home, she hits her student Benton Anders in the road.
