Dirk Pitt
Dirk Pitt is the head of special projects for NUMA. It is part of Pitt's job to investigate shipwrecks. In this novel, Pitt begins the story while attempting to salvage artifacts from a Civil War era shipwreck. While diving on this wreck, Pitt is approached by the government to find a ship near Alaska that is suspected of releasing a nerve agent into the ocean around the Alaskan coast near Augustine Island. Pitt is able to locate the ship within a few hours of arriving in the area, thanks to a satellite picture of the area. Pitt identifies the ship as marooned on the island itself. When Pitt and his crew arrive on the ship, along with EPA agent Julie Mendoza and her crew, they find the nerve agent in the cargo hold of the ship.
