Summary
At the beginning of Chapter 24, Virgil confirms dinner plans and finds out that Margaret has a new plan to try to locate Jesse. Before dinner, he takes time to study his list of suspects, but does not come up with any connections that would help solve the case. At the restaurant, Corbel Cain comes in with his wife and Virgil notices that they look as if they get along. Then David Birkmann comes in and Johnson says that he is the killer and points out the hat he is wearing as an example of how strange he is. Then Virgil notices Cain looking at Bickmann and senses trouble. At dinner, Virgil’s group talks about how Margaret is offering money for information about Jesse. Clarice says that someone is either going to turn Jessie in or kill Margaret.
