Chapters 15-17 Summary

In Chapter 15, Ben and Madec arrive at the sheriff's station to discover that the sheriff has gone home and one of his deputies, Strick, is left in charge. Ben tells Strick he has a dead body in his car and wants to report an accident. When Strick finds Madec tied up in the jeep, he orders Ben to free him and take him to the local clinic. Ben does as he is told, waiting while Madec's wounds are cared for. When it is Ben's turn to have his wounds cared for, he is so exhausted that he barely notices the hostility shown him by the nurse. The doctor takes careful note of each of Ben's wounds before treating them and releasing him. Strick then takes Ben back to the sheriff's office to question him. When Ben grows too tired to answer...
