Chapters 7-10 Summary

In Chapter 7, Ben reaches the butte and moves to a side where he hopes Madec will not see him right away. Ben searches for handholds to help him climb the side of the butte but has such a hard time that he nearly gives up. Finally Ben finds a single handhold and pulls himself up the side of the slick rock with pure determination. Naked now because he has used his underwear to wrap his swollen and torn feet, Ben slides across a ledge on the butte that slowly takes him up the side. When Ben reaches a fissure in the rock, he cannot find a way around it. Instead, Ben falls into the fissure and slides on his back and bottom along the new ledge until once again he finds himself rising up the side of the rock.
