Point of View
The novel is divided between the perspectives of Jane McKeene and Katherine Deveraux. Both perspectives are limited, though the reader's perspective is broadened significantly by having both perspectives. For example, Jane and Katherine are separated for about a year and a half. During that time, Katherine believes that Jane is dead because she saw a shambler bite Jane's arm. There should have been no way for Jane to survive that attack and Katherine goes through those months believing that she failed to protect Jane and grieving for her friend. The reader knows that is not true and that Jane has actually become immune to the plague. The reader will likely expect that Jane and Katherine will rush to each other and renew their friendship the moment they are reunited, but that is not what happens.
