Nicodemus, Kansas
Nicodemus is one of the few towns in Kansas at this time, and it is built on the ground of a former military fort. Some of the survivors from Summerland arrive in Nicodemus, and Jane notes that the buildings have a military look to them with the exception of Gideon's house. The town is very different from Summerland. The church is an ordinary size, unlike the huge church at Summerland. There is also a library. Jane is almost immediately put in jail on the charge of killing Summerland's Sheriff Snyder, and the author describes several of those specific buildings, including the jail. The town's perimeter is protected by a series of fences and a gun that Gideon Carr invented.
